PhD Technologies for Cultural heritage: programme rules

 

The set of training activities for doctoral students aims to train researchers with critical thinking and excellent scientific and methodological skills to carry out advanced research activities in academic or non-academic settings.
Doctoral students are admitted to the final evaluation after having acquired 180 ECTS, divided into

  • research training credits (120 ECTS)
  • complementary and third mission training credits (60 ECTS)

 

Research training credits (120 ECTS)

They are awarded by the scientific committee at the end of each year, following an assessment of the skills acquired by the doctoral student in terms of his/her ability to carry out the research project independently, with maturity and effectiveness, in a national or international context.

 

First year - 20 ECTS | Are obtained by:

  • The positive evaluation of written report + oral presentation resuming research activities and (including scientific communication and training) and results obtained.
  • A positive evaluation of the personal web page (in terms of completeness and update).

Second year - 45 ECTS | Are obtained by:

  • The positive evaluation of written report + oral presentation resuming research activities and (including scientific communication and training) and results obtained.
  • A positive evaluation of the personal web page (in terms of completeness and update).

Third year - 55 ECTS | Are obtained by:

  • The positive evaluation of written report + oral presentation resuming research activities and (including scientific communication and training) and results obtained.
  • At least one manuscript under review (NOT ONLY SUBMITTED) in a scientific journal ranked Q1.
  • At least a total of 3 months of research abroad (summing up during the whole period of the doctorate), including one single period of at least three weeks.
  • A positive evaluation of the personal web page (in terms of completeness and update).

 

Complementary and third mission training credits (60 ECTS)

They are subdivided into three groups. Each student must obtain the number of ECTS indicated for each of the three groups.

  1. Interdisciplinary training (40 ECTS) 
    Activities related to these credits are intended in person and are organized and delivered by the scientific committee. It is highly recommended to obtain these set of ECTS during the year of the PhD. The timetable of the lessons will be provided timely.
  2. Training related to the specific research project (15 ECTS)
    These include:
    a. Training delivered by other PhD courses at UniTo or by doctoral courses at other national/international universities (ECTS as per the specific course)
    b. participation in summer/winter schools and workshops (1 day = 1 ECTS, at least 3 ECTS, max 10)
    c. participation in scientific congresses (1 day = 1 ECTS, at least 3 ECTS, max 10)
    d. presentations at congresses (1 presentation = 0.5 ECTS, at least 1 ECTS, max. 5)
    e. presentations at congresses (1 presentation = 0.5 ECTS, at least 1 ECTS, max. 5)
  3. Transversal skills training and third mission (5 ECTS). These include:
    a. Dedicated coursed delivered by UniTo (4 h = 1 ECTS)
    b. Preparation of a "research story" for the Frida platform or other similar platforms (2 ECTS, mandatory) to be published online in the final year of the PhD course.
    c. Third mission events (international researcher’s night, etc). These shall be validated and evaluated in terms of ECTS by the scientific committee.
