Academic training
T4C PhD students will develop their individual research project with the guidance of Supervisor(s) appointed by the Scientific Board.
The scientific training necessary to carry out excellent research, while enhancing career prospect after the PhD, encompasses different kind of training: formal training (classes and seminars), training through research, training through exposure to the non-academic sector, transferable skills training.
In particular, the PhD Programme offers:
Basic Training: mandatory classes and seminars offered by the Scientific Board at the beginning of the first year of the Course.
This training aims at uniform PhD students’ knowledge, giving them fundamental tools to start work on their project, while preparing them to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
Specific Scientific Training: this training is tailored on the PhD student’s needs and is made up of two kind of training.
Formal training: fellows may attend advanced (3rd level) courses, seminars, summer or winter schools offered by the University of Torino or other institutions to gain specific knowledge and skills relevant to the implementation of their research project (i.e. courses on methods and techniques).
Training through research: knowledge and competences gained by working in close relationship with supervisors, who provide one-on-one training and guidance, research groups and colleagues at the Hosting Departments.
Laboratory activites are also part of the research training.
In addition, Phd Students are encouraged to spend periods abroad at academic or non academic institutions, and period of secondment at non academic organizations.
They are asked to take part in international conferences, write scientific essays, and disseminate the results of their research, also to the general public.
The education of PhD Candidates is completed by the transversal skills courses organized by the Doctoral School.
